The Peradeniya Teaching Hospital created history by being the first and only hospital in South Asia to have successfully performed 100 kidney transplants on children. | This achievement was made within 14 years after performing the first such kidney transplant in 2004. On 16th February 2018, a simple ceremony was organised at Teaching Hospital Peradeniya to mark 100th successful renal transplants performed during this period, where all these children attended At this ceremony Miss Minhajiya, the first child to undergo a kidney transplant in 2004 and Master V. Thanukshan of Batticaloa, the 100th child to undergo a transplant conveyed their thanks and compliments. More than 118 transplants have been carried out to-date at the Professorial Paediatric Unit, producing several significant research publications by the Academics of Paediatric and Surgery departments. Prof Asiri Abeyagunawarden, Prof M.D. Lamawansa, Dr. Oswald Fernando (Visiting Surgeon from Royal Free Hospital, United Kingdom) who were initial and foremost members of this kidney transplant program as well as Hospital Director Dr. Arjuna Tillakaratne, Consultants Dr. Shenal Thalgahagoda, Dr Heshan Jayaweera Prof Chandra Abeysekara, Dr. Tilak Abeysekara, Dr. M. L. S. Beligaswatta, Dr. Arjuna Aluvihare, Dr (Ms) Vasanthi Pinto, Dr. Kapila Gunawardene, Dr. Channa Ratnatunge, Dr. Chula Gunasekera, Dr. Gamini Buthpitiya and the rest of the hospital staff were also present. |
